28 October - Tanosaki-Richards duo, UMBC, Arbutus, MD -- The T-R duo played contemporary works by Hiroyuki Yamamoto, Drake Mabry, Michael Finnissy, Toru Takemitsu, and Hiroyuki Itoh.
In addition to the detailed program notes, clarinetist Richards made introductory comments about several pieces. Of the Mabry piece, which was written for him, he remarked that it reminded him of a novice learning to play the clarinet. The work had the most astonishing array of multiphonics, and does give the impression of beginner blowing, except no novice could produce the tones and harmonics with Richards' precision. (Moreover, I was enveloped by his sound. It almost felt like 3-D audio. (Was there some kind of miking and amplification?))
Pianist Tanizaki soloed on the Takemitsu piece which ranged up and down the keyboard, at times. What also struck me was the audience restraint in wating for the last chord to compeltely die out before applauding. (I've been to some performances at the Freer gallery in DC, where someone would start applauding too soon.)

18 November - film: Intangible Asset No. 82 and performance by Simon Barker (drums), Kim Dong-Won (changgo drum, vocals), and Bae Il-Dong (vocals), Meyer auditorium, Freer Gallery, Wash., DC -- The film showed Australian jazz drummer, Simon Barker, on a quest to meet elderly Korean shaman musician, Kim Seok-Chul.

24 December - Getty Villa, Malibu -- saw this small bronze figure of a lyre player and his companion (Greek, 690-670 BC. According to the caption, he's striking (plucking? strumming?) his strings with a plecktron (plectrum or pick).
